Dr. Thomas Barrera Invited to Speak at the 2024 USC Battery Safety Workshop

Updated: Jun 6

The organizing committee for the 2024 Battery Safety Workshop (BSW) has invited Dr. Thomas P. Barrera to present a talk on lithium-ion battery (LIB) safety industry lessons learned and state-of-practice (SoP). For the past 20 years, Tom’s professional career has centered on all aspects related to LIB safety and reliability with a special focus on knowledge capture and transfer. This includes hands-on experience with the well-known 2013 Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliner LIB safety incidents, multiple LIB safety assessments of NASA crewed spacecraft mission programs, and active subcommittee service on NASA, AIAA, and SAE battery safety standards development. Tom’s role as a highly sought after expert witness on civil legal matters involving lithium-ion cell and battery safety incidents adds to his unique experience base.

Hosted by the University of South Carolina (USC) College of Engineering and Computing, the 2024 BSW will be held August 5-6, 2024 on the campus of USC. The BSW aims to provide an informative and inclusive forum to discuss the state-of-the-art research progress in the broad area of battery safety. Tom is joining other invited speakers representing a diverse set of industry experience and academic backgrounds. Industry speakers include representatives from General Motors, Argonne National Laboratories, American Lithium Energy Corporation, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Dow Corporation. Speakers from academic institutions such as Purdue University, University of Connecticut, University of Alabama at Huntsville, and Missouri S&T are also represented. Tom’s invited talk is titled, “Evaluating Industry Lithium-Ion Battery Faults: Causal Factors and Lessons Learned ”.
