The Americas Int'l Mtg. on Electrochemistry and Solid State Science (AiMES), a joint meeting between The Electrochemical Society (ECS) and Sociedad Mexicana de Electroquímica (SMEQ), will be held in Cancun, Mexico from September 30 – October 4, 2018 at the Moon Palace Resort. This international conference will bring together scientists, engineers, and researchers from academia, industry, and government laboratories to share results and discuss issues on related topics. The Call for Papers instructions are now available via the ECS website with a submission deadline of March 16, 2018.
Tom will be serving as the lead organizer for the Battery Safety and Failure Modes (A07) symposium. The goal of this symposium is to address battery safety from the perspective of materials and cell level design improvements which reduce the severity of an energetic safety incident. Specific topics and areas to be discussed in this symposium include but are not limited to (1) improvements in safety design from materials engineering; (2) advancements in electrode architecture design; (3) cell designs that enhance safety features; (4) safety of large-size cells; (5) novel cell structures that provide inherent safety; (6) advanced system and cell diagnostic and prognostic protocols and tools to alleviate or prevent battery safety incidents; (7) analyses that can improve understanding of battery failure mechanisms and hazards; and (8) other safety features that are not covered by the above or in other symposia.
Along with Tom, Dr. Chao-Yang Wang (Professor, Mechanical and Nuclear Engr. Dept., Penn State University), Dr. Yo Kobayashi (Central Research Institute of Electric Power, Japan), and Dr. Boryann Liaw (Dept. Manager, Energy Storage and Advanced Vehicles, Idaho National Laboratory) are serving as symposium organizers.
